Saudi Prince Wants to Buy Kingdom Hotel Investments










According to a recent article by the Associated Press, the Saudi billionaire prince with the majority of stocks in the Citigroup wants to buy all the shares from the Kingdom Hotel Investments.
The Associated Press reported:
“In an e-mailed statement Monday, Kingdom Holding Co., headed by Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, said its Kingdom K-5-KR211 unit will offer $5 for per share and GDS for the 44 percent stake it does not already own in in KHI. It valued KHI at $843 million.
Alwaleed, ranked this month by Forbes as the world’s 19th wealthiest billionaire, said the deal offers minority stakeholders short-term liquidity at attractive terms.”

Billionaire was robbed in Four Season Hotel

Mr. Pepe Fanjul, the billionaire sugar baron, was robbed at the Four Season Hotel in Los Angels during his visit for the Oscars. The thief run away with a total of $45,000 in jewelery.
It was like a movie, Mr. Fanjul was in his suite at the Beverly Hills Four Season Hotel when he was robbed by the thief known as “Ricco Suave”
Mr. Fanjul commented: “We were victims of a robbery at the hotel. He took my wife’s jewelry that was both valuable and sentimental. We are OK and have reported the incident to the police.”

Accor Hotel Won’t Recover Easily

According to a recent report by Accor Hotel, they believe they won’t be able to recover from the global crisis any time soon. They believe it will take them at least 5 years to recover revenues.
Peter Verhoeven, chief of the company’s German operations said: “We have lost about 15 percent of revenue, and we won’t be able to increase prices by more than 3 percent per year in Germany.”
The situation is critical and Accor Hotel is Europe’s largest hotelier, which means that small hotels might be able to take advantage of this situation, by lowering their prices.

Best Western in Puerto Rico

The former Best Western Hotel in Puerto Rico has expanded its location to open a new Convention Center and Casino.

Choice Hotel International has announced the opening of 36 hotels in the month of January. Choice Hotel International decided to go big and opened the hotels in a total of 14 different states around the U.S. and in nine countries.

Marriott might suffer to recover from the crisis

Apparently, the giant chain hotel Marriott has been suffering from last year’s global crisis and it hasn’t been easy to recover since that.
Marriott President Arne Sorenson told the Reuters Travel and Leisure Summit: “The most over-the-top excesses will probably be a long time — if ever– coming back”
He also commented that the Marriotts in the U.S. were the hotels that showed 9% less revenue compared to other Marriotts around the world.

Taliban Militants Attack Hotel

The Wall Street Journal has recently announced in one of their articles that Taliban militants have attacked a hotel in Kabul, killing at least 17 people at the Safi Landmark Hotel.
“A spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of Health said that nine bodies and at least 25 injured people have been brought to local hospitals.”
“Foreigners were among the dead and wounded, he said. A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed responsibility and said five Taliban suicide bombers took part in the operation.”

LaSalle Hotel 4Q Loss

The Wall Street Journal published the following article about LaSalle Hotel 4Q Loss:
“LaSalle Hotel Properties (LHO) posted a wider fourth-quarter loss as the upscale hotel real estate investment trust posted lower revenue. But occupancy grew.
Shares fell 1% to $19.75 in after-hours trading as the company projected per-room revenue to fall another 4% to 6% this year.
LaSalle, which owns 31 hotels in 11 states and the District of Columbia, reported lower room rates and revenue per available room throughout 2009.LaSalle reported a loss of $4.9 million, compared with a year-earlier loss of $2 million.”

As every year the company Spa Star completed its annual data about spas in luxuries hotels around the U.S.
According to their data, there has been a decrease of Average Treatment Rate(ATR) of 4.5% in 2009 compared to 2008.

Sheraton Hotels Expands Around the World

The famous chain of hotels Starwoods & Resorts Worldwide, Inc., has announced its plan to expand around the world starting in 2010 until 2012.

Hilton Garden Inn Had To Evacuate Guests

The Hilton Garden Inn in Portsmouth, New Hampshire faced a stressful morning today when a gas leak sickens elven of its guests.
The hotel closed at 10 am after “an exhaust vent malfunctioned and caused a buildup on the basement level of odorless and colorless carbon monoxide.”
Firefighters and ambulances showed up immediately at the Hilton Garden, but thankfully, none of the guests was injured or intoxicated seriously.

The well-known chain of hotels, Best Western International, has recently announced the opening of its first hotel in Ukraine.
The Best Western Sevastopol Hotel in Sevastopol, is located right on the sea port, in a great cultural area of the country.

U.S.A Performance for January 2010

The United States faced a critical year in 2009 with the global crisis and one of the most affected industries was the hospitality.
According to the STA database report, the U.S. has ended “the week virtually flat with a 0.8-percent decrease to 48.4 percent. Average daily rate dropped 4.8 percent to finish the week at US$95.34. Revenue per available room for the week fell 5.6 percent to finish at US$46.14.”
This is just the begging of 2010 and there is time to recuperate what has been lost, but apparently the U.S. is still facing economic problems in the hotel industry.
Canada Performance

In a recent report, the Canadian hospitality industry has posted mixed results of its performance for the first month of 2010.
According to the STR database the occupancy for the hotel industry ended with a decrease of 58%, while “revenue per available room for the week rose 1.1 percent to CAD$65.50.”
“Among the provinces, Manitoba reported the only double-digit occupancy increase, rising 10.0 percent to 61.4 percent, followed by New Brunswick with a 9.1-percent increase to 45.6 percent. British Columbia experienced the largest occupancy decrease, falling 11.0 percent to 51.9 percent.”

Drastic Change in China’s Hotel Performance

According to a recent report by STR Global, China had a drastic change in its hotel performance in 2009. In contrast to China’s fast growing economy, the hospitality industry has been suffering since the beginning of last year.
Experts and professionals had predicted that China’s economy will soon overtake Japan’s; however, the decline in RevPAR went down 21 %.
“The nationwide downturn in hotel performance nevertheless reflects the impact of the global financial crisis of late 2008 and 2009.”

Marriott Hotel Is Waiting for 4Q Results

Marriott International, Inc. has announced that they are waiting for the fourth quarter results, as they are not yet available. However, the company believes that the last quarter of 2009 might have better results compared to last year’s report.
Mr. Marriott said: “For Marriott, the fourth quarter looked better than we expected outside North America, while things in the U.S. and Canada were also a little better. Leisure travelers are responding to the terrific values we’re offering. We’ve also seen business travel and large meetings start to pick up, which is big for our industry.”

Hyatt Will Open 3 New Hotels in China

Suning Real Estate Development Co. and Hyatt Hotel Corporation have signed an agreement for Hyatt subsidiaries to provide management services for the new three hotels that Hyatt will open.
Grand Hyatt Nanjing will open in 2013 while Hyatt Regency Wuxi and Hyatt Regency Xuzhou are planned to be opened in 2012.

Hilton Hotels Expand in Greece

One of the most well-known hotel chains will expand in Greece. Hilton Worldwide is marking the beginning of what promises to be a significant change in the hotel industry on the Island of Kos in Greece.

U.S. Hotels Increased Occupancy

According to the latest report of STR, the U.S hotel industry showed a significant increase in occupancy and revenue per available room during the holidays.
During the week of December 27th, 2009 until January 2nd, 2010, U.S. Hotels indicated positive numbers. This situation was seen back in December 2008.
The report from the STR stated:”In year-over-year measurements, the industry’s occupancy increased 5.9 percent to end the week at 45.5 percent. Average daily rate dropped 4.0 percent to finish the week at US$99.79. RevPAR for the week rose 1.6 percent to finish at US$45.37.”

Hyatt’s Management Agreement in India

The Hyatt Hotel has announced its management agreement with DB Hospitality Pvt. Ltd starting on mid-2010. The Park Hyatt Mumbai, Grand Hyatt Goa, Grand Hyatt Pune, Hyatt Place Pune, and Hyatt Place Mundra will be manage by DB Hospitality Pvt. Ltd.

RIU Opens First Hotel in Brazil

It has been recently announced that the chain of hotels and resorts RIU will open its first hotel in Brazil. The new 5-start RIU Enotel will be located in Porto Galinhas and it will be ready to receive guests as of April 2010.
The Hotel will feature 348 rooms that include double rooms, junior suites, superior junior suites and suites. It will be 24-hour All-Inclusive services and guests will be able to enjoy from Brazilian to Italian food.
“The Riu Enotel will be offering a wide-ranging activities and entertainment programme. An activities programme for children ages 4 to 12 will be offered every day and there will be another programme for adults. Guests will be able to enjoy shows and live music several times a week.”

The Verdanza Hotel in San Juan has officially opened its doors to customers. This will be the first hotel with full-service in San Juan.
It is located close to the beach in the Isla Verde district. The hotel has 222 rooms with 20 suites and more than 15,000 square feet of meeting and banquet space.

Ritz-Carlton Has Plans to Expand in Israel

The famous and prestigious chain of hotels Ritz-Carlton has recently announced its intention to have its first property in Israel.

The famous newspaper, USA Today has published a report about the best places to visit in 2010. They are promoting Germany as the first place to visit as there’s been an increased air service from the U.S.

According to a recent report by Hotel Price Index, European hotel prices are 8% less than December 2008 compared to December 2009.

The Wall Street Jouranl has release an article about the Hyatt Hotel testing the IPO Waters. Apparently, the system was supposed to be installed this past summer, but investors were demanding more than what they should have and the process was delayed.
Jim Rossman, head of U.S. equity capital markets at Macquarie Capital said: “We’re running into renewed volatility in the market that we haven’t seen in some time, and one essential requirement for a robust IPO market is stability in valuation.”
He also commented:”The performance of the market in the last few weeks has impacted IPOs. Buyers are more likely to sit on the sidelines when they see comparable valuations coming down.”

Novotel Saigon Center To Open in Ho Chi Minh City

Novotel Saigon Centre will be open in 2012 in the centre of Ho Chi Minh City, Saigon. The 350 room hotel will be located in the same area where the current Metropole Hotel is.

New Agreement Signed in Saudi Arabia

Hilton Worldwide has announced the signing of the First Doubletree by Hilton in Saudi Arabia.The new
management agreement with Hamad Bin Abdulaziz Almousa Trading Group of the 304-room building will be open in 2012.
The Doubletree Hotel by Hilton will be located in the Kingdom’s Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. Hotel Las Palpas in Mexico

Morgans Hotel Group has recently announced a new management contract for the Hotel Las Palpas in Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya in Mexico.

New Hotel Opens in Glasgow

The former Royal Scottish Automobile Club building has been remodeled to be opened as a luxurious five star hotel on Tuesday, November 10th, 2009.
The development investment was £25 million and it has transformed the area. ING Will Open in Mendoza, Argentina

IHG has recently signed an agreement for the new InerContinental Hotel in Mendoza, Argentina. The new hotel will be located in city renowned for its spectacular vineyards.
